Every once in a while, someone simply gets it. Tough to define. Easy to identify. Often the result of a lifetime of experience.

As young boys, Nick and Pete Stamas learned boat building from Greek craftsman in Tarpon Springs, on Florida’s Gulf coast.These skilled men built strong, seaworthy vessels based on proven designs that dated back hundreds of years. It was in this unique environment that the Stamas brothers began building their own boats. In the early years, they built commercial and deep sea charter fishing boats that still sail out of Tarpon Springs. After World WarII, the brothers started building boats in earnest.

By the late 1950’s, Pete and Nick recognized the potential of a then controversial material. Even though they loved traditional  woodworking techniques, the Stamas brothers pioneered the use of fiberglass in boat construction. Stamas Yacht was among the first to capitalize on the design and structural possibilities of this new material. They switched completely from wood to fiberglass in 1959.

During the 1960’s Stamas continued to innovate and raise the standards of quality boat building. Their expertise in fiberglass boat building led them to develop boats for the U.S. and foreign militaries, patrol boats for law enforcement agencies and research/exploration vessels for several agencies and universities.

In addition to pioneering fiberglass boat construction, many features that have become industry standards on boats were Stamas innovations. Fiberglass inner liners and self-bailing cockpits were created at Stamas. Always concerned with safety, the use of foam flotation in boat construction was applied. Such standard features as insulated and overboard draining fishing boxes and built-in livewells were first featured on Stamas boats. Stamas was also the first company ever to put a head under a center console.

Today there are new designs, new techniques and new materials but the currents of tradition run deep at Stamas Yacht. We remain one of the oldest, family-owned boat companies in the United States. The family continues to build boats with the same devotion to detail and respect for the sea that has been the hallmark of every Stamas boat for over 50 years.

Tiara Yachts is a boat manufacturer based in Holland, Michigan. Its models include both fishing and cruising boats ranging from 29-58 feet. The company is most famous for coining the term "open" to describe its Tiara 3100. Tiara is also known as Pursuit through which it produces inboard and outboard engine powered models from 25-34 feet.

Hatteras Yachts was founded in High Point, North Carolina by Willis Slane in 1959. The company currently operates as part of the Brunswick Boat Group, a division of the Brunswick Corporation.

The firm is notable because, breaking with tradition, Slane chose to build his boats out of the then revolutionary material of fiberglass. Hatteras now specializes in sportfishing convertibles and motoryachts up to 100 feet (30 meters) in length.

Hatteras was one of the original users of fiberglass to build boat hulls in the 1960s due to the need of the founders to have a fishing boat capable of withstanding the frequently severe waves created around Cape Hatteras, near New Bern, NC. Their first boats were excellent and they decided to create a company to build and sell these solid fiberglass hull boats. As their product line expanded in size and complexity, they continued to use only solid fiberglass for the underwater portion of the hull, not jumping on the bandwagon of cored sandwich fiberglass, used by many boat manufacturers today. Due to this, Hatteras hulls have not de-laminated causing dangerous conditions or expensive repairs for their owners. As a result, Hatteras continues to be a much heavier boat than many boats currently on the market, though the original construction technique is proven to provide better quality and waterproofing. Many of Hatteras' boats produced for the first 25 years of the company's existence were designed by the famous American marine architect, Jack Hargrave. Many traditionalists consider the Hargrave-designed Hatteras boats to be American Classics.

He soon began to build more boats and joined his brother Henry in 1881 to begin producing boats full time. In 1910, the brothers joined with other partners to form the Smith Ryan Boat & Engine Company. The company name was changed to Chris-Craft in 1924.

The Detroit area company became well known for their sleek racing boats in the 1910s and 1920s. Chris-Craft sold high end powerboats to wealthy patrons such as Henry Ford and William Randolph Hearst. In the late 1920s, Chris-Craft extended its market into the middle class when it became one of the first mass producers of civilian pleasure boats. The company began assembly line production at their Algonac, Michigan, plant, thus dramatically lowering production costs. Until then, most powerboats had been built by hand.

In 1927 the company introduced the Cadet, an affordable 22' runabout. At the time, the domain of speedboats was largely confined to the wealthy. Its innovative advertising campaign promised a piece of "the good life" to the growing American middle class. The fact that the company sold its boats on the installment plan made them among the first powerboats available to the general population.

The Great Depression robbed many Americans of discretionary income, and Chris-Craft sales suffered. The company introduced a line of low-priced powerboats to stay solvent. By 1935, a 15.5' Utility boat could be bought for as little as US$406. During World War II, the company produced small patrol boats and launches for the U.S. Navy.

After the war, Chris Craft introduced an all new lineup of civilian pleasure boats just in time for the massive American consumer expansion of the 1950s. That decade marked the height of company prestige and the brand name Chris-Craft became virtually synonymous with pleasure boating. The company offered 159 different models and was the sales leader in many categories of small civilian powerboats.

The company sold high-end boats to famous customers and Hollywood stars such as Dean Martin, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley. Their boats were often made from the finest mahogany and were considered to be among the best available. They were also easy to operate, a must for their "weekend sailor" owners. In some circles, owning a Chris-Craft was considered de rigueur. Even their lower-priced boats were considered to be of high quality, often featuring such luxury items as a liberal use of mahogany, teak, and brass.

Chris-Craft, Inc. currently offers sixteen models of runabouts, center consoles and express cruisers ranging from 20' to 43' with MSRPs starting at around US$42,000. The management plans to continue to expand the model range in the future.

The Chris-Craft name and distinctive look of its mahogany hull have become such American icons that the boat has been used in numerous films and television shows. The boat was featured in the films Houseboat, Donovan's Reef, Back to School, (the Thayer IV), The Dirty Dozen, Striking Distance and on the television series The Sopranos. A Chris-Craft also made an appearance in the film Pearl Harbor, but experts note that the film, set in 1941, anachronistically featured a 1950s era Capri. Of current models, the Corsair 25 was seen in Mission: Impossible III. The Launch 25 can be seen in Fool's Gold (2008 film) and the Lancer 20 in The Proposal (film).
